Les Mots Volés (Stolen Words)

RHMS French Students acknowledged the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Day by reflecting on the book Les mots volés (Stolen Words) by author Melanie Florence. The students learned about the book’s meaning in English and took the time to share an experience of something that was taken away from them. They described a moment where they felt sad, betrayed or ashamed of something that they could no longer have and realized the impact it had on them.

The unit followed by watching a read aloud video of the story in French and the students made their own connections to how the characters in the story felt going through abuse and trauma with the forced removal of their language.  To consolidate their understanding of the book, they ended the class with a written discussion post describing their understanding of the story.
