Spoken widely around the world, French is one of Canada’s two official languages. The ability to communicate in French and appreciate French culture are important components of a well-rounded education.
French is introduced to our Montessori students on a verbal basis. Through physical activities, stories, songs, and games conducted almost entirely in French, children develop listening comprehension skills and an awareness of other languages. Students are exposed to a range of motivating activities that help them develop confidence and competence in French as they progress through the preschool program.
The vocabulary practiced includes numbers, colours, the date, the seasons, and the weather. The children also participate in pre-reading and word recognition activities. The French program exposes learners to the French language as a tool for communication. Carefully selected visual aids, such as real or imitation objects, flash cards, and books, take into account the diversity of the children’s interests and encourage spontaneous participation.
