Sharing Is Caring In Montessori Art

Montessori students create Eric Carle inspired artwork.
In the month of February we have been learning about our favourite children’s authors.  One of the authors we loved the most was Eric Carle, who has illustrated more than seventy books (most of which he also wrote!).  His best-known work is The Very Hungry Caterpillar (which is almost 50 years old) and it has been translated into 62 languages and sold over 44 million copies.

We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and watched some videos about the way Eric Carle paints on tissue paper and cuts out his pieces using templates. This art project was especially fun for our Montessori students because they got to do some sharing as well.

Each class was assigned a set of colours and each student painted a BIG piece of construction paper in the style of Eric Carle.  The papers were then cut up and shared with the students in all the other Montessori rooms, so each class got to use all the colours.  We had a great time creating our butterflies (inspired by the ending of The Very Hungry Caterpillar) using a very similar collage technique to Mr. Carle’s.

Some of our beautiful butterflies can be seen on the bulletin board outside of
Gym 1.
