Sir Cumference And The Dragon Of Pi
The Grade 6 students go on a Math Adventure.
Using a hands on learning activity, the grade 6’s explored and investigated the relationship between a circle’s diameter and its circumference. The lesson began with a reading of, “Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi” by Cindy Neuschwander. The book was about a person called Radius who had to go on an adventure and save his dad from becoming a dragon. While we read the book, we learned many things about circles, angles, and pi. The book brought a whole new concept and was fun to read. In addition, we also took part in a hands on activity. In the activity, we built circles and measured their diameters out of centimeter cubes. We continued to explore by measuring everyday items like water bottles, glue sticks, markers etc. We learned how to measure circles without a ruler, and that the circumference is approximately 3 times the diameter (or pi).
Overall the experience was fun and great as we learned many things about circles, had a great time exploring the diameter and circumference, and learned about the relationship between them.
