Symmetry and Self Expression

Grade 6 Students Learn About the Art of the Self Portrait

Self-portraiture is an excellent way to teach children about diversity in society as well as their own uniqueness. This kind of artwork also shows them how they change and grow over time. The Grade 6 students in Mr. Joe Lynch’s class excitedly took out their sketchbooks today to create self-portraits using charcoal pencils and smudgers. They also used their macbooks to reference their faces using their webcam and other pictures. They practiced artistic techniques like the proportion formula to create a symmetrical face, and shading techniques for blending charcoal. As Mr. Lynch pointed out to the students, famous painter Bob Ross once said, “In art there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.”
