Mastering Mapping at the Kortright Centre

Grade 3 Students Bundled Up for a Day of Woodland Navigation

RHMS Grade 3 students recently had the opportunity to explore Autumn at its finest at the Kortright Centre last week. The students were introduced to mapping features such as symbols, scales, and grids. They then practiced orienteering skills such as reading maps, orienting maps in the correct direction, operating a compass, and following a map route. Each class had the chance to practice these skills hands-on by going out on a scavenger hunt. Working in pairs, they mastered the art of direction, locating, and orienteering through activities and challenges given to them by the helpful guides at Kortright. Continuing their work in pairs, they were given a more difficult challenge: landmarks to locate in a larger (and wilder) area. The Grade 3 students accepted the challenge with optimism and confidence, knowing that what they learned through the RHMS curriculum would guide them to success!
