Complex Science from Simple Machines

Grade 1 Students Are Visited by Scientists in the School

Students learned about pulley systems, levers and fulcrums, wheels and axles, and more! This is part of the Grade 1’s Simple Machines unit. Students are going to be learning about each individual machine in more detail over the course of their science lessons, but this workshop was a great way to show them concrete examples of each machine and its inner workings up close. They got to figure out how to raise a flag pole using pulleys and force, tip a lever over a fulcrum by adding weight to the ends, and create the wheels and axles of a miniature car, just to name a few. Students also continued to use the scientific method when conducting each experiment in the workshop. It’s hard to believe these engineering Grade 1s were Montessori Preschoolers just one year ago!
