Give Me Shelter

Grade 2 Takes a Field Trip to Evergreen Brick Works

RHMS Grade 2 students had the opportunity to explore, discover, and build in the great outdoors at Evergreen Brick Works last week. Students worked in groups in hands-on activities, one of which used natural materials to create Earth shelters. The students learned that different building materials and techniques can affect the strength and stability of various structures. Building Earth shelters gave students the opportunity to have a multi-sensory direct learning experience connected to the science and technology components of the curriculum. In addition to building strong and stable structures, they also learned about soils in the environment, and growth and change in plants. Students came away with a true appreciation for the science and technology of nature after building shelters that mimicked the architecture of plants and animals.
