When Tectonic Plates Collide

RHMS Students Build Structures to Withstand an Earthquake

Grade 4 students have been studying natural disasters in class and got the chance to simulate their very own jello earthquake! They brainstormed, designed, and then built structures from marshmallows and toothpicks. Students used what they had learned about the behaviour of our planet’s natural forces in order to engineer sturdy and resilient structures that could withstand earthquake damage. After they tested their structures in the jello simulation, students were then able to reflect on what changes were needed in order to make their building stronger.
