Our Home And Native Land

Students in Grade 5 have been learning about various interactions between Indigenous peoples and Europeans prior to 1713. Students were tasked with explaining some of these interactions by creating an annotated map using Google Earth, combining History, Geography, and Technology. By using modern technology to learn about the past, students were able to connect with the material at a deeper level, as it became more relevant and current. The Grade 5 students enjoyed consolidating their knowledge in a creative and tech-centred way! 

 

This assignment also encouraged students to think critically about how we learn about the past. Who is telling the story? Who is being left out of the story? Who was this information written for? In Grade 5 Social Studies, we have been emphasizing these questions while we learn. It is important that we recognize and learn about the whole truth of Canada’s history, the good and bad, and use this knowledge to help us move forward in becoming a fair, equitable, and empathetic society.
