The Elements Of Art

RHMS students in Grade 3, 4 & 5 completed a unit that had a focus on specific elements in art.

The Grade 3 students were introduced to the art of lettering with illustrated letters, creating awesome name illustration pieces.  They had a fun time thinking up ways to draw some of their favourite things that would be depicted as the letters of their name.

Our Grade 4 students had a focus on the element of shape, learning about different types and styles of letters that can overlap, rotate, and be displayed in different ways through the creation of their raining letters otherwise known as name art.  It also showed their ability to create space and depth in their pieces as their letters gave the impression of falling from the sky and “piling up”.

Ultimately, the Grade 5 students had an opportunity to learn more about street art and graffiti artists as they focused on the elements of two and three dimension shape and form. They created a name “Masterpiece” after trying out other forms of graffiti name art, such as the “tag” and “throw”.  They applied different lettering styles reflective of street art works and were quite successful in fooling many into thinking they are true, experienced graffiti artists.

Throughout the unit students were able to practice using the different elements and then applied their knowledge and strengthened skills to create more challenging compositions.  The masterpieces that emerged in the end were simply breathtaking.  Great job RHMS Artists!
