Let's Extract DNA

Have you ever wondered how scientists extract DNA from an organism? All living organisms have DNA. RHMS Grade 8 students have been learning about how genes lead to expression of specific traits in an organism.

Before winter break, students put on their biotechnologist hats and carefully extracted DNA material from fruit. During extraction, students used a soap solution to “pop” the cell open to release the DNA from the nucleus and cells. They had chilled isopropyl alcohol to the solution to cause the DNA to surface to form a clear globby structure and they even got to take it home!
