As part of the STEM curriculum at RHMS, the Robotics Program sparks student interest and curiosity in engineering and mathematics. Working in teams, students are able to problem solve, be independent thinkers, be effective team members, and learn how to communicate well with their peers.
Students apply reasoning, questioning, researching and critical thinking skills to construct the most efficient of programmable robots. Our primary level students build these skills using Dash and Dot robots, and by the time they are in their junior through intermediate years they are working with more complex platforms such as VEX IQ. Students build and program robots to find answers to challenges presented. Our observations have shown that this program has a positive effect on a student’s enthusiasm to learn and to achieve.
Students in grades six, seven, and eight at RHMS are selected to take part in various Robotics Competitions throughout the school year. The events challenge teams to design and build robots to complete tasks in a dynamic, engineering setting. These competitions offer students the chance to develop problem-solving and teamwork skills while competing on an international platform.
