Uncovering the secrets of natural selection in our Grade 8 STEM class! The peppered moth investigation had the students diving into the fascinating world of adaptation and survival, with a nod to the impact of the Industrial Revolution. Between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a build-up of soot and pollution affected the moth's ability to camouflage in order to evade predators. From calculating survival rates to graphing their findings, the students explored how size and colour impact survival. This activity was inspired by industrial melanism - a classic example of natural selection in action.
