Why Choose RHMS

Empowering children to find purpose and ambition in life... all for the love of learning.

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make. You will be confident in your choice of RHMS, for the following reasons, and more...
At RHMS, children experience an evolving and innovative curriculum within a safe and secure environment. This empowers them to feel confident that they can achieve anything. RHMS has optimized the independent school experience with small class sizes, specialty faculty, the 1 to 1 iPad/Macbook program, a healthy nutrition policy, extracurricular activities, extended care hours, and more. These amazing advantages allow our students’ potential for achievement to grow in a community where they feel supported and motivated.

Extra-Curriculars

RHMS offers a variety of extra-curricular activities for students of all ages.  Students can participate in activities such as Band, Choir, Robotics, and a variety of sports teams.  By participating in such activities students can have fun and socialize with their peers while exploring their interests and learning the importance of leadership, commitment, time management and team work.  Participation in extra-curricular activities also helps build student self-esteem and self-confidence.

RHMS also has a House System.  From the moment a student enrolls at RHMS, they become a member of one of four houses, named after mythical creatures: Falcon, Phoenix, Sphinx, and Dragon. Younger students, older students, and faculty come together multiple times per year, whether to bake cakes, read together or cheer on their house-mates at pep rallies.

RHMS Student Council was created to promote and increase school spirit, help the community, and to demonstrate leadership qualities to younger students. Candidates for student council positions are responsible for campaigning to their peers to be elected.  Student Council provides students a great opportunity to get involved in making the school and the community a better place.

Innovative Curriculum

RHMS aims to bring the world into the classroom using not only physical resources such as textbooks, maps, globes, and computers, but also important abstract resources such as imagination, vision, and passion. In the last three decades the RHMS curriculum, like the world, has evolved and changed. It is our task to remain current and adapt in order to effectively prepare our students for the future, while simultaneously ensuring that traditional core knowledge at the Montessori and Elementary levels remains consistent. Our task of bringing the outside world, its challenges, and realities, into the classroom is one that, if successfully achieved, will allow students to understand the dynamics of a boardroom and those of a street corner. This entire process is what we call our practical life teaching. Detailed descriptions of our curriculum at each grade level can be found by clicking here.

The most common question we receive is where do our graduates go after RHMS?  We are proud to say that all of our 2017 Grade 8 students have been accepted to excellent high school programs throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Communication

Most of the time when a parent receives a call from a teacher or administrator, an issue regarding their child needs to be addressed. We believe in positive enforcement and in personal connections. In fact, parents want to know how their child is doing at the school. Open communication between your family and RHMS is essential for your child's success. Research shows that the more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other about a student, the better equipped both will be to help that student achieve academically.

RHMS works with you in constant communication with:

Parent conferences each term
Monthly teacher-parent phone-calls
Online Parent Portal which includes news updates and resources for parents
Parent Committee of Volunteers
Community Events

Meet & Greet Night - New and returning families are invited to join us  before the start of the school year for our annual Meet & Greet Night. This is the first opportunity to become acquainted with your child's new teacher(s) before the start of the new school year. Homeroom teachers place a call to the parents of their students to personally introduce themselves and invite the family to this event.

Family Day - One of the many traditions at RHMS is our annual Family Fun Day. On the first Saturday following the start of the school year in September, we have the opportunity to enjoy our campus in a casual way, spend a day with family, renew acquaintances, and make new friends. We plan a variety of fun events and activities for children of all ages, parents, and staff. We feature a wonderful variety of inflatable slides and bouncy castles, obstacle courses, games, and sports. We also feature a DJ to entertain and delight the crowd with interactive fun; face painters, balloon artists, craft tables, and strolling performers who will thrill you with magic, stilt walking, and juggling talents. We are so thankful and proud to be a part of the community. We look forward to giving back each year with an extraordinary experience for all who attend.

Our school would not exist without the passion of an engaged parent community committed not only to the success of their own children, but to that of the whole community of students. This reality has evolved into a culture, embraced by the independent school community that places a high value on the role of family in the success of an individual student. Parents are welcomed into the school and help create a sense of 360 degree support for each child.

Homework

Family time at home with your child is important - we understand. When our students go home at the end of a school day, we make sure that we optimized the time they had a school to complete their homework, so they have more time to spend building relationships at home. The Homework Program provides a quiet time after the regular school day where students can complete their homework under the care and supervision of their homeroom teachers. The Homework Program takes place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. involving a smooth transition from the regular school day, giving our students the opportunity to receive extra assistance with their homework, as needed. This hour also enables students to partake in leadership and mentoring opportunities.

1 to 1 Program

Part of the RHMS advantage is our 1 to 1 program. All students in Grades 1 to 3 have access to an iPad and all students in Grades 4 to 8 have access to a Mac laptop computer for educational use throughout the duration of their RHMS careers. Every classroom is also equipped with a Smart Board which allows teachers to provide an enhanced, flexible, interactive, and eco-friendly learning environment.

Specialty Teachers

Specialist Teachers play an important role in the experiences of students at RHMS. Research conducted by the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario supports the philosophy that Specialist Teachers positively impact student achievement. The advantage of an independent school like RHMS is that specialty teachers are implemented in Science, Art, Drama, Physical Education, French, Music, and Computer Studies. Furthermore, Grades 5 to 8 students are on a rotary schedule which means they also have a specialized teacher in Math, English, and Health and Social Studies. This enhances the focus and quality of the core subjects, while also preparing students for a high school schedule.

Independent Advantage

Independent schools are supported by tuition and the generous donations of parents and alumni who believe in the greater value of independent education to produce the leadership our country needs. The support helps these schools employ the most cutting-edge technologies that are, after teachers, the most important weapon in the arsenal of education today. Technology is the enabler of vast learning, and literacy in this area is a fundamental driver of success in a knowledge economy. CAIS schools are on top of this in ways that make even post-secondary institutions awestruck. There is no doubt that education is in the eye of the storm that is sweeping the world’s economies. Innovation, creativity, technological wizardry, collaborative leadership, global connection, and trans-disciplinary skills are among the major drivers of success for today’s professional. Students emerging from this experience will be at the forefront of that global shift and positioned to lead us into a new frontier.

Single Grade

By providing single grade Elementary classes, our teachers are able to provide a focused curriculum to your child, without the confusion of delivering two grades of curriculum at once. Your child is in an environment where they are surrounded by peers of the same age who are learning the same curriculum. Their socialization and interaction with classmates increases.

Time spent each day in a classroom is optimized. For example, in a single Grade three class, the teacher would teach Grade three math concepts. In a multi-grade classroom of Grade two and three, the teacher would need to decide to teach Grade two or three concepts, or bits of both. While this may be advantageous for the younger grade to learn advanced curriculum, some students may struggle without having first learned the prerequisite material. The older grade may be at a disadvantage for having to review material at a grade level lower. Ultimately, a single grade classroom ensures that your child is taught the appropriate curriculum, at the appropriate time, with the utmost attention and support from their teacher.

Please note: Our Montessori Preschool classrooms include students that are  four and five years of age. The Montessori philosophy and method of teaching fosters a loving, independent environment tailored to the individual needs and development of each student. Mixed ages at this stage provides an abundance of opportunities for learning, helping to create a sense of community where everyone contributes to and takes responsibility for the functioning and maintenance of the environment (classroom). The older children provide leadership and guidance, and act as models for the younger children; they benefit by helping the younger children, reinforcing skills and knowledge previously learned, and gain satisfaction and self-worth by helping others.

Extended Care Hours

A number of options are available for your child before and after school Opening the school at 7:00 a.m. enables parents to drop off their child before work and trust their child is being well cared for. Keeping the school open until 6:00 p.m. provides comfort to parents knowing their child is being cared for until they can be picked up.

Before School Supervision from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., elementary students have the opportunity to participate in some exciting physical activity in the gym before class starts.

Homework Program 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. provides a quiet time after the regular school day where students can complete their homework under the care and supervision of their homeroom teachers.

Mentorship Program 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. where students in Grades Six through Eight provide guidance to students in Grades One through Five in both academic and extra-curricular activities.

After School Supervision 3:10 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., remaining elementary students transition to Study Hall to continue quiet homework and reading time under the care and supervision of our after school teachers. This offers parents the option to pick up their child later, if necessary.

Premium After School Program 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In addition to our standard Before and After School Supervision, we offer Premium After School activities for an additional modest fee.

Health & Nutrition

For our students to remain mentally alert and physically fit, we encourage and teach healthy eating habits in the hope of developing a positive attitude toward food and eating. Based on information and research compiled by school officials and the Ontario Ministry of Health, our school has developed and maintains health policies and nutritional guidelines to ensure every child's health and well-being is looked after.

Certain food items have been recognized as inappropriate and lacking in nutritional value and are, therefore, not permitted in the school. As some students have a life-threatening allergic reaction to nuts and shellfish, all shellfish, nuts and nut products, or any products that may contain traces of shellfish or nuts are not permitted in the school. Please download our Food Policies sheet for a list of snack suggestions and items we do not permit in school.

We also offer an optional lunch service for all students at Richmond Hill Montessori Private School. Through the Lunch Lady Company, students can receive a hot meal each school day. All foods are prepared off campus and delivered to the school minutes before lunch time. All meals on our school's menu meet the criteria of our food policies. Each meal is individually packaged and labelled with the student's name.

Facilities

To provide the best quality education, RHMS was designed and constructed by world-renowned architectural firm IBI Group across from the David Dunlap Observatory, in the heart of one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Richmond Hill. Situated on a seven-acre, tree-filled campus, emphasis on the natural environment provides a setting conducive to a quality education. RHMS provides a home-like feeling in a school environment. The school is equipped with ultra-modern facilities to make your child’s learning experience unforgettable.

CAT4

Each year, RHMS students in Grades Three, Six, and Eight write the Canadian Achievement Test (CAT4) for reading, writing and math. This standardized test is one of the most widely used achievement tests in Canada, written by more than 60,000 students in both public and private schools across the nation.

Average scores for the 2018/19 academic school year in the following grades are as follows:

Grade Average Score
3 95%
6 95%
8 96%

Attached the Grade Equivalency chart for each grade, compiled by the Canadian Test Centre.

Exceptional Teaching

Our philosophy when looking for our staff is simple: through the eyes of a child. We only hire certified teachers who are committed to inspiring children’s intellectual, creative, and physical potential to develop a passion for lifelong learning, health, the community, life and its wonderful challenges. Our Montessori head teachers are Montessori trained and certified.  All Montessori co-teachers are ECE certified.  Elementary teachers must have their certification from the Ontario College of Teachers. All RHMS teachers are members of the Ontario College of Teachers and are in good standing. All staff at RHMS undergo a criminal records check before commencing their employment with us.

Small Class Size

Smaller class sizes guarantee that teachers can spend more time ensuring that students understand the material. With an average class size of 20 students, your child won't get lost in the shuffle. A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
