Can You Take the Heat?

Grade 6 students learn about conduction, convection and radiation by discovering the secret workings behind a candle-powered putt-putt boat.
Last week, students in grade 6 had an in class workshop from Scientists in the School. They became part of a research and development team for “Scientists in the School Toy Company”. They analyzed how conduction and convection were used to propel toy boats. They also investigated how the particle theory links energy and temperature and how energy transformations keep things moving.

At the end of the workshop, students were given a ‘paycheck’ for their hard work and learned that every energy transformation has some heat!
