Our Portable Garden

Spring has sprung in our Montessori classrooms.
Hello Spring! As our classroom is beginning to smell more like dirt, we can finally say that spring has finally bloomed in our room.  Over the course of this past month, we have gradually introduced botany into the classroom. Our children have anticipated the beginning of this new season with great excitement. Thus, we all rolled up our sleeves and began to build a portable indoor/outdoor herb garden under Mrs. Soussan’s careful guidance.  When the kids planted their seeds, they became very curious about what would happen next.

To our surprise, the children seem to be very patient as they care for the garden every day.  The waiting seems to make the moment our herbs sprout more exciting!  As our herbs begin to grow, the children cannot wait to put some of their math skills to the test by having to measure the growth of the plants. The highlight of our project is however, the moment our herbs will be ready to eat!  The children are very excited to add the herbs they have planted to their lunches.

As educators, we highly encourage families to spend time gardening with their little ones.  Gardening as a process is not only a wonderful introduction to science, but it also fosters responsibility, patience, family bonding, and healthy eating.
