Set Sail for Science

Grade 1 Students Construct Boats

Grade 1 minds sailed towards a deeper understanding of physics and engineering when they fashioned themselves some creative and also effective boats in their science lesson. They used clay, tin foil, popsicle sticks, and straws to design a raft that would float on water. If the raft floated, they then tested its weight capacity by adding pennies to the raft. After testing out their creations, students had to consider and identify which materials caused their raft to sink, and then invent a new design for more effective floating on their second try. This lesson taught students to think analytically about how to design and construct a working prototype, and then redesign it for improved functionality.
