Scientists in the School challenge Grade 1s in "simple machines" activity
RHMS Grade 1 students learned about "simple machines" during a Scientists in the School workshop.
The students looked at inclined plane (slanting, flat surface); wedge (two inclined planes placed back-to-back); screw (inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder); first class levers (the fulcrum between the effort and load); wheel and axle (turns around an axle inserted through its center); and pulley (circular lever that consists of grooved wheel rotation).
The grade ones rotated through six different stops, and each had an opportunity to test their theories against results.
