Maple Leafs STEM Day

Grade 8 STEM students participated in a virtual field trip and joined the Everfi Future Goals Hockey Scholar Classroom with the Toronto Maple Leafs and special guest Darryl Sittler! The former Leafs captain shared his passion for math as a student and promoted goal setting and making a difference each day at school.

Our students completed modules in the Future Goals STEM program in order to be invited. In this program, students explored how Science and Engineering concepts are used at Scotiabank Center. They discovered the science of particle motion and formulas for maintaining the ice surface. They also examined how to measure angles for passing the puck, the velocity of players during gameplay, the physiology of strength and endurance of hockey players and completed various other challenges to fill their virtual trophy case. Students were also surprised to learn that Scotiabank Center is cooled exclusively by Lake Ontario! Not only was this a cool fact but saves energy and is better for the environment.

Over 5000 students across Ontario participated in this virtual event. It culminated with a giant trivia game where our students scored big and took home the top 3 prizes! RHMS trivia winners will be awarded swag donated by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
